National Emergency Laparotomy Audit

 

NELA is a national audit of emergency laparotomy. An operation that consists of making an incision over the abdomen to enter the abdominal cavity, is called a laparotomy. This is often required to be done urgently in case of surgical emergencies such as bowel perforation or obstruction. I am the Surgery Lead for this audit at the James Paget University Hospital


EPOCH Trial

 

This is a national study that aims to improve the outcomes for patients undergoing emergency laparotomy. Epoch stands for 'Enhanced Peri Operative Care of the High-risk patient'. I am Surgery Lead for this national quality improvement initiative, which is currently under way.
